    PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

    Dear Cove Families,

The Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill - On  Friday, October 17th at 10:55am, our school is participating in the Great Shakeout earthquake disaster drill with a full evacuation. We are doing this Great Shakeout event along with several other schools and districts in the US and internationally.

Please do not plan to pick your child up between 10:55-11:35am on Friday 10/17 . If you do arrive to pick up your child during that time, you will need to come to the blacktop and wait several minutes for our emergency release protocols to be set up and carried out.

The Great Shakeout  website has great material for your own family to prepare in the case of a major disaster or emergency . (Please note- the official date on their website is 10/16, but Cove will be holding our drill on the 10/17).  Please take a moment to read this important information about our school’s disaster preparation  and response and remember to list emergency contacts for your child in case you cannot pick them up in case of emergency. The people listed in our system are the only ones to whom we can release your child.

We practice so we are prepared! Thank you for your support.

    Sincerely,

    Michelle Walker, Principal

Thank you all so much for supporting our Book Fair!
We would like to extend a huge thank you to all the families who volunteered their time and to everyone who shopped at our Book Fair in person and online- your involvement made the event a great success! The students always have so much fun buying books at the book fair, and your support is greatly appreciated and allows us to bring more books to the district libraries. If you ask many adults their memories of elementary school, quite a few will say going to the book fair. Thank you again for helping us get more books in the libraries for all the students to experience. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Strong Student Growth Reflected in 2025 CAASPP Results

    Quick Facts:
    • Growth in All Areas: English Language Arts (+2%), Math (+5%), and Science (+3%)

    • More than 50% of students exceed math standards at all schools (and over 76% met or exceed standards)

    • CAASPP student score reports for current 4th-8th graders can be accessed via Aeries

    • District and school CAASPP data can be accessed here

    • Detailed CAASPP Board Report

    Dear LCMSD Community,

Today, the 2025 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results were publicly released by the California Department of Education. They are available here. We’re excited to share that LCMSD students continue to excel as LCMSD CAASPP results show gains across all subjects:

    • English Language Arts (ELA): +2%

    • Mathematics: +5%

    • Science: +3%

These results reflect the dedication of our students, teachers, staff, and families. It is important to note that more than half of our students exceed standards in math at every school, with 76%+ meeting or exceeding standards.

Each spring, LCMSD students in grades 3-8 participate in the CAASPP assessments, which measure critical thinking, problem-solving, and writing aligned to California’s academic standards. These assessments provide one valuable snapshot of student learning - alongside daily classroom work, projects, and teacher feedback - to help us ensure every student is growing and thriving.

We are proud that this growth is being seen districtwide. The increases in all three subjects show that our long-term focus on literacy, Cognitively Guided Instruction in math, and data-driven interventions is making a difference. These efforts, combined with high-quality teaching, dedicated support staff, and strong family partnerships, are helping students reach new levels of success.

While we celebrate this continued progress, we also remain focused on helping every child meet or exceed state standards. Continuous improvement is part of our culture, and we will use these data to guide next steps in curriculum, instruction, and targeted support.

For families, individual CAASPP score reports for current 4th–8th graders are now available in Aeries. To access your child’s report, log in to Aeries Parent Portal and select Test Scores from the menu.

We invite you to review the detailed CAASPP Report shared at the September 17 Board Meeting for a deeper look at our district and school results.

Congratulations to our students, teachers, staff, and families - your hard work is paying off!

    With pride and gratitude,

    LCMSD Update 10.6.25

    • Where’s My Teacher? Understanding Professional Development in LCMSD

    • Becoming a Trustee Workshop – October 8 at 5:00 via Zoom; recording available October 9

    • Superintendent Coffee Chat – October 17, 8:30–9:30 a.m. at Neil Cummins (open forum)

    • “Let’s Talk” Parent Education – First Elementary Session

    Dear LCMSD Community,

It’s been a full and engaging start to October! I want to thank the many families who participated in SPARK in the Park yesterday. Events like this help strengthen the connections that make LCMSD such a special place to learn and grow.

Also, today kicked off Parent-Teacher Conference Week, an important opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher, celebrate growth, and discuss goals for the months ahead. We deeply appreciate the time and collaboration that go into these conversations - they are an essential part of our shared commitment to student success.

Below are a few additional updates and opportunities to connect this month.

    Thank you,

    Dr. Brett Geithman
    Superintendent

Where’s My Teacher? Understanding Professional Development in LCMSD
From time to time, you may hear that your child’s teacher is out for the day to participate in professional learning. These days are not just time away from the classroom - they are an essential part of how we continually grow as educators and strengthen teaching and learning across the district.

At LCMSD, we believe that ongoing professional growth is central to providing the best educational experience for our students. Our professional development framework is multi-layered and intentionally designed to build shared understanding, deepen expertise, and personalize growth.

We are fortunate to have three instructional coaches who guide much of this work:

    • Lisa Capobianco – Literacy Coach

    • Beth Hawkins – CGI Math Coach

    • Nathan Beach – Depth and Complexity Coach (20%)

Our professional learning model includes several interconnected layers:

    • Foundational PD – Full-day sessions designed to establish a shared, districtwide understanding of key initiatives and best practices.

    • School-Level PD – Site-specific professional learning tied to each school’s goals, often integrated into staff meetings and site-based planning.

    • Department (Hall) and Grade-Level (Elementary) Lab Days – Teachers collaborate in teams to analyze data, plan Tier 1 instruction, and engage in classroom-based learning experiences where strategies are modeled and practiced. These sessions are led by our instructional coaches, and substitutes are utilized to cover classrooms.

    • EL Education Lab Days  – This year, teachers and administrators will also engage with EL Education staff developers through several Lab Days focused on modeling lessons and deepening understanding of our newly adopted literacy curriculum.

    • Individual Coaching – At the most personalized level, teachers work one-on-one with instructional coaches who provide them support tailored to their classroom needs.

Our professional learning focus areas for 2025–26 include:

    • Implementing EL Education in literacy across all schools

    • Implementing Depth and Complexity at Hall Middle School

    • Continuing support for Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) in mathematics

Through this intentional and layered approach, LCMSD educators continue to learn, reflect, and refine their practice, ensuring that every student benefits from high-quality, research-based instruction every day. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding when your child’s teacher is engaging in this important work.

Becoming a Trustee Workshop: Wednesday, October 8 at 5:00 via Zoom (LINK)
With a current vacancy on the LCMSD Board of Trustees, this workshop is a great opportunity for community members to learn more about what it means to serve. Current Trustees and I will share information about the role, responsibilities, and appointment process. Whether you are considering applying or simply want to better understand Board governance, we encourage you to attend. A recording will be posted (HEREon October 9 for anyone unable to join live.

Superintendent Coffee Chat: October 17, 8:30–9:30 a.m. at Neil Cummins
Coffee chats are a great venue for parents to learn more and partner with our schools. This month’s chat will be open-ended - any and all questions are encouraged. As always, parents from all schools are welcome to attend.

Join Us for the Cove Library Book Fair – October 6–10

The Cove Library is hosting its Literati Book Fair next week! This special event happens every other year—alternating between NC and Cove—and this year it’s Cove’s turn!

    • Monday: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
    • Tuesday: 8:30 am – 6:00 pm (open late for families)
    • Wednesday: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
    • Thursday: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm Friday: 8:30 am – 2:00 pm
Families are invited to browse and shop after school at 1:15 pm each day during conference week. You are also welcome to stop by before or after your conference, and Tuesday evening we’ll stay open late to make it easier for families to attend with their children.

Students will visit the book fair with their class during their library time next week.
    • K–2nd students: Will visit with their class to browse but may not purchase during the school day.
    • 3rd–5th students: May shop during the school day, with an option to use gift cards for cashless purchases. To purchase a gift card for your child, go to the online book fair, link to Cove and then purchase a gift card in your child’s name.
    • Here is a link to the online book fair. Books by Scholastic are only available online.
Teachers’ Wish Lists: Each teacher has created a wish list of books for their classroom. Families may choose to purchase from these lists to support their child’s class.

The book fair is a win–win: children discover new books they love, and proceeds directly benefit The Cove library (as well as Neil Cummins and Hall libraries), helping us add more books to our shelves for all students to enjoy.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating reading and supporting our school library. Thank you for encouraging your child’s love of books—we look forward to seeing you at the fair!

    PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

    Hello Cove Families,

Conference Week is October 6-10.  We have 1:15 dismissal every day that week.

Parent-teacher conferences are a great opportunity to connect and ensure your child feels seen and known. In 5th grade, students join the conference too. Teachers will be sharing baseline assessment data, classroom work samples and initial observations about your child so far this year.

During the conference, you can expect to:

    • Share information about your child so the teacher can learn more about them from the people that know them best.

    • Review of information from beginning of year assessments and classroom work samples:

      • K - this includes the assessments from that first week of school that the teacher administered 1:1 with your child along with classroom work samples.

      • Grades 1-5 - you will be able to discuss math and reading data from our recent district iReady assessments as well as classroom work samples.

    • Review how your child is doing with respect to learner traits (behavior, social skills, executive functioning, etc)

    • Understand expectations for your child this year.

    • Learn ways you can support your child at home

    • Share any concerns or ask questions you have.

    • Teachers may also review attendance during the conference, so please consider any concerns regarding tardiness, early departures, or absences.

Please be sure to sign up for a conference through your child’s teacher. Our goal is for every family to sign up for a conference!

    Sincerely,

    Michelle Walker, Principal

LCMSD Board Vacancy - Thank you for your service Eric Schmautz

    Dear LCMSD Community,

Please see the press release below regarding Eric Schmautz's resignation and vacancy on the Board of Trustees.

Trustee Seat Available on Governing Board

This communication is to announce the resignation of Eric Schmautz from the Larkspur-Corte Madera School District Board of Trustees on September 17, 2025. Eric has served on the Board since 2022 and was Board President in 2023-24. Eric was presented with a unique and exciting opportunity abroad and has made the difficult decision to step away from his role. We sincerely thank him for his years of dedicated service as a board member. Serving the community has always been one of Eric’s greatest passions, reflected not only in his role as Trustee but also as a long-time Rotarian. Through his Rotary connections, he helped facilitate scholarships for summer and after-school programming for students in need. He was also a champion of intervention, playing a key role in the Board’s commitment to use one-time funds to double intervention services last year and this year. Eric’s leadership and commitment to students leave a lasting impact on LCMSD, and we are deeply grateful for his service. We thank him for her service to the District. Please join me in wishing him the best with his family and his future endeavors.

    PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
    Dear Families,

Wondering why your child's  teacher was absent for a day? They are busy growing as professionals!

Over the past two weeks, our teachers and instructional coaches have engaged in analyzing recent student assessment data. These data conversations are happening in Grade Level Learning Labs, where teachers from Cove and Neil Cummins come together with our Math and ELA coaches to dive into data and instructional planning.

By the end of this upcoming week, all grade levels will have had a full day dedicated to this collaborative work. Teachers are examining student progress, refining instructional strategies for math and our new ELA Curriculum, and planning targeted supports to ensure both challenge and support in student learning. This collaboration helps to build common experiences across classrooms and schools.

In addition, this past Wednesday teachers, coaches and interventionists participated in iReady professional development. This learning supported our continued growth in making the most of iReady’s resources to inform instruction, personalize learning and help maximize student success.

This work is not just about numbers, it is about understanding the whole child and making sure our instructional practices respond to the diverse needs of our learners. The energy and commitment our staff are bringing to these professional development opportunities is important, and we are excited to see the impact this will have on student growth.

    Sincerely,

    Michelle Walker, Principal

    Book Fair!
The Book Fair at Cove is back, October 6th-10th, and this year we are partnering with a new company, Literati, who
partners with schools to run both in person and online book fairs. This is a wonderful opportunity for students, families, and our school community to come together to celebrate reading and discover new books. With books from many different publishers and curators who know what kids love, families can expect to find recently released titles, popular series, diverse voices, and so much more.

The Book Fair is not just about buying books. It is about sparking curiosity, building home libraries, and encouraging a lifelong love of reading. Families can shop in person during fair dates, and for those who cannot make it, Literati’s online store offers an even wider selection that can be purchased. Check out the Online Store HERE

We look forward to the joy this Book Fair will bring, from the discovery of a new favorite story, to the pride in owning your own books, to the buzz of excitement in the library and hallways. Stay tuned for more details and be sure to mark your calendars.
Thank you PTO for the new mural (painted by Mindful Murals) in the kindergarten playground!

    Board Updates
On September 17, 2025, the Board met. Michelle Walker, Cove Principal, provided an update on the school-wide expectations rollout and ways that the Cove community creates conditions for positive behaviors across campus. Trustees approved school fencing for all three sites (pending grants or facilities only designated funds), unaudited actuals, and the sufficiency of instructional materials. Jaime Heaps, Executive Director of SPARK, presented the annual budget report. Trustees were also presented with the 2025 CAASPP data, which showed many positive trends (more to come on this). All agendas can be found here.

    Coffee Chats: 9/5 Recap & 9/24 Agenda

    Dear LCMSD Families,

Superintendent Coffee Chats are a great way for parents to connect with school staff, district leadership, and one another. Some chats are open-ended while others highlight specific initiatives taking place in our schools.

On our September 5, 2025 chat we focused on Depth and Complexity Icons —a Hall-only initiative designed to further rigor and differentiation in student learning. Here you will find the slide deck and a video recap. We will also update this website after each chat with materials and/or videos. We encourage you to check it out!

We have scheduled our next chat for September 24, 2025 from 8:30 am - 9:30 am at Neil Cummins. This session will be focused on the SPARK budget and programs funded within the district. The last 20 minutes of the chat will be open to questions about anything and everything district related. All district families are invited to attend.

We look forward to seeing you there!
